Helsinki is a vibrant seaside city of beautiful islands and great green parks. The city’s rhythm is laid back yet at the same time refreshingly active in terms of both the number and quality of restaurants and nightclubs.

The capital of Finland is a compact city easily explored on foot. Design, architecture, culture and shopping are all great exploration angles and large park areas, forests, lakes, and the coastline with numerous islands sprinkled off it make certain there’s no shortage of natural presence. Needless to say, there’s something going on in Helsinki every day of the year.

In 2014 Helsinki was awarded City of Design status as part of the Creative Cities Network established by UNESCO.

White Nights and warm days: summer in St Petersburg

This is a time when St Petersburg is at its most lustrous and is irresistible.
White Nights revelling starts in May, when the city finally succumbs to spring and the parks are filled with flowering trees, but mid-June is peak time, as the sun slumps lazily towards the horizon but never fully sets.

To understand White Nights, you have to take a close look at the city of St. Petersburg. Known as the former imperial capital of Russia, it’s the country’s second most populous city and a gateway to the frigid Baltic Sea.
More than a hundred islands connected by 342 bridges make up the city.
It was Peter the Great’s vision to build a “Venice of the North” where inhabitants could navigate the city just as easily by walkway or waterway.
To better understand Peter the Great’s grandiose dreams, pay a visit to his fountain palace of Peterhof just outside town, which was built from 1714 to 1725.

The mighty Neva cuts the city in two and most festival activity is centered off the Nevsky Prospect (the main street) and the southern side of the river.
While here, you must visit the worldclass State Hermitage Museum and the dark fairytale Church of the Savior of Spilt Blood.

White Nights (and summer days) are experiences not to miss in St Petersburg.

Midsummer

The best reason to enjoy the Midnight Sun

Summer in Finland is a spectacular time of the year. For those who venture north of the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set at all for couple of months, while further south the sun can be visible for almost 24 hours a day during June and July.

At the end of June, longest day of the year is a key element in the festivities in the northern parts of Finland

That phenomenon, known as The Midnight Sun, is caused by the tilt of the Earth’s axis in relation to its orbit around the sun – as a result, at both North and South poles, the sun only sets and rises one day every year. In Finland, the summer months of June and July are the months where the Midnight Sun is at its strongest but the further north you go, the longer the sun stays above the horizon. In the very northernmost parts you can experience a full midnight sun from May to August.

When nights are almost as light as day it is possible to do all the same things that you would do during the day – the biggest difference comes from the incredible change in the nature of the light. The sun takes on a reddish-yellow color – almost like during sunrise or sunset – and everything around you is bathed in an unimaginably warm, bright light.
